Where does Southern Charm’s Shephard “Shep” Rose’s money come from?

William ShephardShep” Rose was a Charleston socialite on Bravo’s Southern Charm. Shep was known for his free-spirited, free-thinkin’ Grateful Dead following, southern hippie charm and charisma. And he is known for his famous family and his OLD southern money.

The 34-year-old Professional Raconteur grew up on Hilton Head Island, S.C. He attended boarding school in Virginia and went on to study at the University of Georgia. He also studied business at Vanderbilt business school.

On the Southern Charm Reunion Andy enquired about how Shep manages to pay his bills and he responded:

“I have a couple funds out there”, implying he may be a trust fund baby. Although Shep sort of backtracked wanting to show that he had earned his spending money.

But this guy DOES emanate from some OLD money–money from early 20th century steel mills. His family is deeply immersed in the mucky-muck.

Shep Rose Grandfather (father’s side)

Shep’s full name is William Shepard Rose III and he comes from a famous South Carolina family–although his grandfather spent most of his life in Ohio and was born in Taylor County
Florida.

His grandfather, the original William Shepard Rose died in 2004 at the age of 81 and ran a steel company.

Mr. Rose O.G. has quite an impressive resume.

He served in the United States Army under General Patton in Western Europe during World War II. He worked 36 years with Armco Steel all over the world. In 1971 he became president of Armco International in Middletown, Ohio until he retired in 1983.

He was a mover and shaker, an active member of the Chamber of Commerce in Italy and France and the United States, a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute, the International Committee of the Chamber of Commerce, the International Discussion Group of The Conference Board and Director/ Trustee U. S. Council of the International Chamber of Commerce.

William Rose served as Director of the U. S./ Yugoslavia Economic Council and as a Trustee of the Kershaw County Fine Arts Endowment Fund, Past Chairman and Director of the Kershaw County Development Board, a member of the Boykin Hunting Club.

Shep Rose Grandmother (father’s side)

His grandmother is Meta Cantey Boykin Rose, born December 18, 1924 in Boykin, South Carolina, daughter of Meta Cantey Boykin and Bolivar De Saussure Boykin.

From 1967 to 1981 she lived in Middletown, Ohio with Shep’s grandfather.

She grew up in Camden, South Carolina and graduated from St Mary’s School, Raleigh, North Carolina and attended The University of South Carolina and believe it or not was a licensed pilot and went by the name “Pete”. She was an active and lifetime Board member of the Boykin Spaniel Society.

Shep Rose Father

His father William Shepard Rose, Jr., started practicing law when Shep was 1-year-old. He was an attorney with the McNair law firm in Hilton Head Island, SC. From 1977-1981 he was with the firm of Frost and Jacobs, from 1973 to 1976, he was an attorney with the Office of Chief Counsel, Tax Court Litigation Division, Internal Revenue Service.

Attorney with the IRS? That’s gotta pay…in more ways than one…as in lots of connections—potentially lots of inside deals, etc.
