Ryan obviously made his fortune swimming. He was born in Canandaigua, New York and began swimming when he was five years old but did not become serious about the sport, until age 14. He competed successfully in the 2004 Olympics, winning a team gold in the 200-meter relay, and an individual silver medal in the 200-meter medley. Throughout 2006 and 2007, he broke numerous world swimming records, winning gold, silver, or bronze at almost every event in which he competed. After winning multiple medals at the 2008 Olympics he became the first individual swimmer to win seven medals at the Short Course Worlds. He also won six medals at the World Aquatics Championships in 2011. His five medals in 2012 brought his total to 11 Olympic medals. And we know medals mean cash.
United States Olympic Medalists win more than the actual medal as they also get a cash honorarium by the US government. Gold medal winners receive $25,000, Silver medal winners receive $15,000, while Bronze medal winners receive $10,000. But winners have to pay huge taxes on their gold medals!!.
