Sharleen Joynt reflects on The Bachelor and the famous kissing scene

Bachelor contestant and 29-year-old Ottawa opera singer Sharleen Joynt spoke to the Ottawa Citizen from New York, where she is working on a production of Arabella with the Metropolitan Opera company, about her time on The Bachelor.

Let’s be honest, Sharleen was obviously not that in to Juan Pablo from the get-go. The gorgeous Chinese, Aboriginal mutt was a little too ‘sophisticated’ for Juan Pablo. After-all, he did say that he loved how she ‘used words in sentences’. Sharleen received the most awkward first impression rose ever and the first kiss between the two was even more epically awkward.

“I did not feel good after that kiss, I was pretty sure there was nothing there.”

“Oh my God, that first kiss was awkward. We were in the middle of a soccer field, and there were all these bright lights, and the cameras are about two metres away from us. And I was wearing red lipstick, and I didn’t even feel ready to kiss him because we were not at that point (yet). All of sudden he was coming toward me, and to be honest, one of my biggest regrets was kissing back instead of waiting for a time when I felt more comfortable.”

She also said she had a tough time watching the kiss (like the rest of us) on television, adding “it was excruciating and I’m sure all of America felt the same way.” —Yeah, we did.

The magazine asked the acclaimed singer:

‘So why would she appear on a TV show that many people consider frivolous and sexist?’

“It started as one of those things that was kind of a joke and I went to the casting call on a lark mostly,” she says. “One thing led to another, then it became this real opportunity that was in my lap and I suddenly had a ‘you-only-live-once moment.’ I figured it was more likely I would regret not doing it than having regret done it” — are you suggesting the show is ridiculous Sharleen?

She disputes reports that she did the show to boost her operatic career.

“I couldn’t pass up on the novelty of it, and it was such an unique opportunity that so few people get to experience. I couldn’t say no.”

Sharleen walked off at the seventh episode. She famously questioned ‘the process’ throughout the show. How could anyne question the process of finding a life-partner in 9-weeks on a reality show?
