Ok, first of all, I had no idea who Channing Tatum was before last Saturday. First, my sister in law brought him up in conversation over dinner, to which she received blank, unknowing stares from my husband and I. She looked him up on IMDb on her iPhone to show us a picture of him (more blank stares). I’m not sure how we managed to not know who he was, but we did.
Then, after dinner, we headed to the local redbox and a woman in line told us we should give 21 Jump Street a try. So we did. And, lo and behold, one of the stars was….Channing Tatum. Coincidence? I think not. [And, by the way, although far from an Oscar contender, we really enjoyed the flick. It’s funny, light-hearted entertainment at its best.]
Then, to add more ridiculous Channing Tatum-ness to the already ridiculous Channing Tatum night we were having, I get a
text, while I’m watching 21 Jump Street on DVD, from a friend of mine asking me if I’d like to go see Magic Mike the following Tuesday. Ok – again, I had no idea what Magic Mike was (I thought it was perhaps a stand-up comedy show), so I Google’d it and……WHAT IS GOING ON HERE BECAUSE IT’S ANOTHER MOVIE STARRING CHANNING TATUM!!??!?!?! So, Channing Tatum went from nonexistent in my head to overload in just 3 hours. Crazy!
So, Magic Mike. Ok – that movie is a SITUATION. I watched the trailer, so I knew what I was in for, which was: more skin than storyline. But, IMHO, they tried too hard to do both (skin and storyline), which meant they did neither very well. The storyline was awkwardly slow-paced and disjointed. The acting was equally awkward, slow-paced and disjointed. And they tried to insert too much of this awkward, slow-paced storyline, which took away from what we were all there to really see: Channing Tatum and that werewolf dude from True Blood dance and get naked. I mean, there were only a couple Channing Tatum routines in the whole movie, and they were both kind of short (I could have used more dancing and less “a day in the life of a Tampa-based group of strippers”.)
I still love that I went to go see it with one of my best girlfriends though. It was ridiculous enough to make for a ridiculously fun night out. And – we went to one of those fancy theaters that serves you booze that you can order right from your seat. And booze is something you’re definitely going to need while watching this situation of a movie! hahaha
