Juan Pablo Galavis enneagram 3: the Opportunist

Ladies everywhere went crazy during Desiree Hartsock’s After The Final Rose episode where Chris Harrison announced that Juan Pablo Galavis would be the next Bachelor. Even though Juan’s air time was minimal his fan appeal was huge——at the time!

But throughout the season Juan Pablo started to show some cracks and the sheen on the freshly oiled Venezuelan soccer player started to wear off.

So let’s do an enneagram personality breakdown to try and understand why:

Juan Pablo Galavis, like Chris Harrison, is an enneagram 3 the Charmer, the Performer, the Opportunist.

HOWEVER, unlike Chris Harrison Juan Pablo is not a healthy 3.

The 31-year-old single dad, professional soccer player acquired a huge fan base despite his miniscule amount of air time. And perhaps that was part of the problem for ABC. Their impulsive decision to pick Juan Pablo was based on very limited data. In other words they did not make sure that Juan Pablo was not a complete a-hole before they cast him.

So now that the season is over, it’s safe to say that Juan Pablo was a disaster.

This personality breakdown should help explain why:

Juan Pablo Galavis enneagram 3: the Opportunist

The 3 is also the Performer, possessing an uncanny social intelligence, a natural charm, self-confidence, positive attitude and charisma—seeking success through appearance, ding, ding, ding.

An average 3 is essentially a name-dropper or an image-obsessed shallow person that seeks to take credit for work that other people have done, and seeks to be the center of attention at the expense of others.

  • Basic Fear: Of being worthless
  • Basic Desire: To feel valuable and worthwhile
  • Enneagram Three with a Two-Wing: “The Charmer”
  • Enneagram Three with a Four-Wing: “The Professional”

Key Motivations: Want to be affirmed, to distinguish themselves from others, to have attention, to be admired, and to impress others.

So Andi Dorfman’s Fantasy Suite experience with Juan Pablo confirmed he IS an unhealthy 3. It was textbook!

“Waking up this morning I could not wait to get out of the fantasy suite. The fantasy suite turned into a nightmare,” she said……. “I saw a side to him that I didn’t really like. The whole night was a disaster.”

Juan Pablo apparently failed to ask Andi a single question about herself and spent the entire night name-dropping and bragging about his soccer career.

It can definitely feel like the 3 is trying way to hard to impress others.

The bragging suggests a deep insecurity from JP that he has not done anything of real value, probably stemming from the fact that it turned out he was currently unemployed and living with his mom and dad. So creating an image of success was paramount to the 3.

The Enneagram Institute claims:  “at a young age, they got the message that they were not allowed to have feelings and be themselves: they must, in effect, be someone else to be accepted.

To some degree, all of the personality types have been sent the same message, but because of their particular background and makeup, Threes not only heard it, they began to live by it. The attention they received by performing in a certain way was their oxygen, and they needed it to breathe. “

So the healthy 3 has dealt with these deep-seated fears of worthlessness and has learned that they have value independent of what others may think of them. They are self-accepting, authentic and even self-deprecating.

They have learned to step out of the spotlight and allow others to “perform”, and to be a “team player,” using their charm and social genius to help others improve and polish themselves. In short, they have done the work to achieve the success they possess both internally and externally.

Ok, so Juan Pablo is not here yet.

Is Juan Pablo Galavis a narcissist?

When they are average they are status seekers. They are all about their image, always trying to promote their image in a positive way. They can be shallow. They can also be manipulative and dishonest in their efforts to maintain the image they have constructed.

They can also be really mean. They love to be ‘honest’ aka be an a-hole. They like to push buttons and tell you what’s wrong with you. Remember when he told Andi she was only still here by ‘default’? And then he clarified “I said you BARELY made it”.

They are usually really good-looking and charming. They can explain their way out of any situation. Juan definitely seemed like he would lie to the ladies a lot, telling them he could not kiss them because of his daughter Camila, etc.

He was clearly driving producers nuts with his dishonesty.

Ironically they are most likable when they put all this away and become self-deprecating.

According to the Enneagram Institute:

‘Threes are self-assured, attractive, and charming.  Ambitious, competent, and energetic, they can also be status-conscious and highly driven for advancement. They are diplomatic and poised, but can also be overly concerned with their image and what others think of them.

They typically have problems with workaholism and competitiveness. At their Best: self-accepting, authentic, everything they seem to be—role models who inspire others.

To this end, Threes learn to perform in ways that will garner them praise and positive attention. As children, they learned to recognize the activities that were valued by their parents or peers, and put their energies into excelling in those activities. Threes also learned how to cultivate and develop whatever about them is attractive or potentially impressive.’

So Juan Pablo is clearly an unhealthy 3. He is insecure, narcissistic, selfish and manipulative. He has not learned that he has value outside of the image he projects. He can definitely turn it around, but he has to put down his façade and allow women to see his authentic self.

  1. Okay, I retract my earlier comment about Juan Pablo not being a 3 and possibly being a 7. Although still possible, it’s more likely he’s a (lower health) 3 as you said.

  2. Hi Christine,

You nailed it about Juan Pablo Galavis, great point on the situation
