Dorit Kemsley $1 million dollar robbery – legit? or insurance scam?

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Dorit Kemsley is making headlines after getting held up at gunpoint Wednesday evening during a terrifying home invasion at her in Encino home.

I don’t want to diminish the terror that she must have endured if the story is legit and it very well may be. I just want to look at the possibility that the robbery could be an insurance scam.

UPDATE: See new surveillance video at bottom.

What we know is that officers responded to a call Wednesday evening, at about 10:50 p.m.  Dorit told the law enforcement officers that “two or three men” had broken into the house by smashing a rear window and went upstairs to find Dorit.

They ordered her out of bed at gunpoint and demanded she take them to jewelry and other valuables around the house and at least one intruder threatened to kill her.

The victim complied, and at some point, the men left the property with belongings worth about $1 million, according to the sources. There were security cameras nearby but it was not immediately clear what was recorded during the incident.

In a press release issued Thursday, the LAPD said “the victim was in the residence at the time and was met by the suspects. The victim was in fear and complied with the suspects demands by directing them to valuables. The suspects took handbags, jewelry, and watches with a significant monetary loss and fled the location in a black truck.”

1: Security system? The house is on the market: Thus, the physical address would be readily available to would-be robbers which should have prompted her and PK to seriously beef up security especially since PK was headed out of town. It’s hard to believe that someone would keep 1 million dollars in valuables in a home at all let alone a home without copious security cameras and alarms, especially since Dorit had been seen on the Reunion that night boasting about her lavish collection of valuable clothes and jewelry. I think she and PK are far more savvy than that and would keep those valuables in a safe guarded location at least until a very extensive security system could be installed.

2: House for Sale: They were trying to sell the house which they purchased for $6.475 Million in 2019. It was initially listed at $9.495 Million last year, but the price has been dropping dramatically.

Now the house is listed at $7.9 Million. So the couple may be desperate for cash, as well as publicity on the home to help it sell.

3. The couple has over 1 million dollars in debt.

Her and husband PK are both named in a 2018 tax document that says the couple owes the IRS $635,887.23.

Dorit is named in a state of California tax lien from March 2021 that states she owes $90,269.46.

The total debt amounts to $1,308,803.09.

4: PK is out of town. PK was in London so Dorit is especially vulnerable with her two children, son Jagger, 7, and daughter Phoenix, 5. It also means one less person who has to detail to police what happened. If Dorit is the only witness, her story can’t contradict anyone elses. And interestingly, the children don’t recall anything about the burglary.

5: Detailing the value of the collection on national TV is a good way to prove to insurers the enormity of the value that was stolen–the same way the Tom Girardi handing Erika Jayne a 1 million dollar Chagall painting on national TV prior to bankruptcy was a good way to show that he had gifted her 1 million dollars that would hopefully be safe from creditors.

6: Surely someone in the neighborhood has security cameras that would have captured the license plate of the car driven by the 3 criminals.

7: 10:50 pm is VERY early for a robbery. Even if lights were off in the house, neighbors would likely still be awake. They could be outside getting out of cars, etc. That seems like a very unusual time for a robbery to occur. Usually it’s in the middle of the night when people are sound asleep or during the day when people are at work. Not 10:50pm when people are laying in bed watching Real Housewives.

8: Still waiting for the 911 call to be released. None has been released as of yet which seems a little strange.

9: Dorit needs a storyline. Erika stole the show last season with her epic legal battles. Dorit needed something dramatic to keep her lucrative job on the show. The house got robbed the day before filming started.

So I have to emphasize this is pure speculation on my part. I don’t have an inclination in either direction on whether Dorit and PK are behind this. What I am definitely inclined to believe is that this was a highly organized crime and was not 3 thugs that impulsively decided to launch such a major misdeed.

I think there was massive planning by some very smart criminals. They clearly would have cased the home and known PK was going to be gone and they would have been aware of specifically what valuables they were after.

The same way the the burglary at Kyle Richards home was an inside job, I believe this was as well, whether by Dorit and PK, or by some workers at the home, or perhaps even some people from the Bravo filming crew who would have a lot of inside knowledge about valuables in the home. Someone very sophisticated did this.

What I also suspect if this burglary is legit, is that PK and Dorit scrambled right afterwards to hide every valuable that was left and claimed way more in their insurance claim than was actually stolen.

UPDATE: 11/09/2021: LAPD releases security camera video

I think I am leaning towards fraud after seeing this video. The 3 brazen men enter from what looks like the front street. The house is all lit up with exterior lights and very bright ones at that — at 10:50PM mind you.

They are wearing light-colored jackets, not black. But of course they are disguised from head to toe so there is no way to ID them from this video so they are not worried about all the cameras.

The only way anyone could catch them is if they tried to sell the merch, but if its insurance fraud they will just drop off the bags of what could be garbage to PK. And yeah you could say another neighbor’s cam could have got the license plate, but I bet they removed or covered or printed a phony plate for this occasion. This crew is smart.

They are clearly in no hurry until after they jump the fence and run to the truck. It’s almost like they want to give cameras time to catch them in the act to legitimize this as a robbery. How could they be so non-chalant? They have no way of knowing that Dorit and PK don’t have someone over with a shotgun.

Until I see something that changes my mind, I am in the fraud camp now.

  1. Rumor has it she has talked about moving to Monaco. The country is safe and there are no problems with crime. They could buy a yacht and enjoy the ocean. She could leave her Hermes on the patio and it would be there when she came back. Her swimsuit company should do well there. I am sure the US government would move her for free.

  2. Dorit has a dog that she loves and any dog owner knows if 2 strangers smash a window to gain access at nighttime. The dog would be going ballistic at the burglars yet it wasn’t even mentioned. Clearly a scam by their body language and too many odd coincidences.

  3. This story stinks and the insurance company should not pay one penny. PK’s body language says it all and Dorit’s black outfit…please. Nice production.

  4. Also, PK seems very protective, if he was away he would’ve called her to make sure she had the alarm on and tell her to sleep with the kids lock all the doors etc. Also this was probably mentioned before but she said she always sleeps with the kids 20 K is away. Her anxiety is she would’ve double lock the doors and double check the alarm

  5. The more I watch the forced reactions and well-received suggestion from PK to just “get away” the more this all screams fake. That insurance company should hire a psychologist to analyze their behavior on the show. I bet they’d have a field day.

  6. It was claimed by a couple of the housewives that Dorit was “in tears” at Kyle’s for the dinner on the night right after the supposed robbery – I never saw any actual tears on her face. She whimpered as if she was crying but I saw no tears shed from her eyeballs! ALSO – what mother – the very next night after she’s been held at gunpoint supposedly fearing for her own life and the life of her children – could LEAVE HER CHILDREN at home even with security guards and nannies. I would never be able to leave my babies so soon after an experience like that – I would be in bed with my babies that night and for many nights afterward thanking God for sparing us all and for allowing me to continue being their mother and a wife to their father.

  7. It’s SO OBVIOUS this is 100% “Insurance FRAUD”. This fictional story told on RHBH is so “insulting to the viewer’s intelligence”. PK thinks everyone is stupid – and also thinks he will “get away with this Insurance Fraud”. Also, it’s so obvious the robbers in the video are “paid actors”.

    • I totally agree. One minute they threatened to kill Dorit, then they gently place the phone by the gate. Surely if they were so ruthless they would have rendered the phone useless.

  8. Dorit is a narcissist and drama queen. Erika had the limelight last season, so Dorit now wants the light to shine on her. The whole thing was so staged.
