‘Bachelorette’s’ Jef Holm finally addresses the Mormon question

Finally, this week, on ABC’s The Bachelorette, the giant elephant in the room was finally addressed…

Q: Is Jef Holm Mormom?

A: Sort of

No doubt Emily Maynard and Jef Holm demonstrated a lot of chemistry in Prague this week, and Jef received a coveted hometown date for next week. It was interesting when Jef spoke about his parents living in South Carolina stating they were on a “mission” for a few years (interesting place to go on a Mormon mission). In fact, Jef’s parents are mission presidents in South Carolina.

The answer answered the lingering question about Jef Holm’s religious beliefs.

“I’m not half Mormon. I was raised Mormon. And my family is still Mormon. And my parents raised me with the standards of the church… I’m just not practicing right now. I mean, faith is something that’s a huge priority on my list and in my life. And I’m really active, you know, in church and everything. I’m just not active Mormon.”

Well, this is an interesting situation. So Jef is a non-practicing Mormon (not to be confused with half-Mormon) at the moment. Is a Mormon compatible with an Evangelical Christian? And what happens if Jef becomes a practicing Mormon? We know faith and loyalty are clearly very important qualities to Bachelorette Emily Maynard from the tsunami of  hypothetical questions she fires at these guys!

But, Jef doesn’t appear to be too high-strung about his religious beliefs. After all, we did see him drinking a beer in London and tonight he dropped the “F” bomb during his one-on-one declaring “I wanna date you so hard and marry the F&@K out of you.”

Jef’s parents, unlike Jef, are quite active in the Mormon church. Monte Holm, 52, and Lisa K. Drake Holm, six children, Stone Cliff Ward, St. George Utah Little Valley Stake. Jef’s Dad serves as a high councilor and is a “former counselor in a bishopric, elders quorum president, and missionary in the North Carolina Greensboro Mission.”–not sure what most of those Mormon words mean!

“Sister Holm” (Jef’s mom)  also does a lot of Mormom things we don’t understand –she “serves as a temple preparation teacher and is a former seminary teacher, counselor in a ward Relief Society presidency, counselor in a ward Young Women presidency, counselor in a ward Primary presidency, and gospel doctrine teacher. Born in Salt Lake City to Larry Wayne Drake and Bonnie Saxton Humphrey.”

Interestingly, it was Holm’s sister-in-law that submitted Jef’s application to the show so those Mormons must be cooler and more laid back than we give them credit for. When he got a call from the show to send in a tape, he almost wasn’t going to. He said that it was, “because I come from a really private family. I’m really private about my life. And I didn’t want to go out on a dating TV show.”

Thank God Jef changed his mind!

The two were exceptionally cute together on this week’s episode in Prague — did you see the marionette puppet show they produced?! — professing their love through puppets! It doesn’t get any cuter! Bravo Bachelorette producers!!!

So I hope the Mormon situation does not become an issue. I have to confess that tonight’s episode changed my favorite from Arie to Jef. Mormon or not, it’s impossible not to root for these two after this week’s show.
