The Ed Swiderski and Reid Rosenthal situation

Tonight things heated up between Ed Swiderski and Reid Rosenthal (both finalists on Jillian Harris’ season of The Bachelorette) when Sarah Newlon spilled the beans to Ed about Reid’s plan to oust him. Reid Rosenthal is an enneagram personality type 1 (click for a refresher course on this personality type), or, as we like to say, an “uno,” and tonight we saw the one’s typical alter ego emerge — The Punative Avenger according to Understanding the Enneagram: The Practical Guide to Personality Types (revised edition) by Don Richard Riso and Russ Hudson. (do not underestimate a scorned uno).

Mild-mannered Reid has apparently been holding a grudge against easy-going Ed for years! Ones can harbor resentments. Their basic fear is being corrupt/evil, “bad”. Their basic desire is to be good, to have integrity, to be balanced.

Their primary motivation is to be right, and to justify themselves.

Thus, it appears Reid needs to show the world he was “right”: he should have won the Bachelorette (even though he has clearly moved on and is now dating Miss USA), and Ed was not worthy of the final rose. Talk about a grudge!

Ed is taken off-guard by the hard-feelings — particularly since both have moved on and are seeing other girls, but I guess it’s easier to not have hard feelings when you are the winner (as Ed won Jillian’s heart on The Bachelorette).

So easy-going Ed goes on a mission to destroy Reid’s plan for revenge. And Ed has a lot more friends than Reid, and I do mean “friends” (two one-night stands and it’s only episode three!). It’s sort of ironic that Ed’s drunken partying is really what created the alliances that would save him and oust Reid — also ironic considering how seriously Reid has taken the game.

When Ed hears about Reid’s plan for revenge he says, “I’m going to smash this guy.”

Ed creates an alliance with the other Pad partiers: Jaclyn, Sarah, Michael, etc. But the house is divided since some of the guys wanna keep superfan/aspiring porn-star Donna in play, as well as low-key Reid. Luckily, the Pad partiers ruled tonight as Donna and Reid were sent packing.

Ed answered some questions about Reid’s shocking betrayal and serious grudge in a recent press conference:

Were you shocked to learn that Reid was gunning for you?
Definitely surprised that Reid brought up this baggage and old business from years ago because we’ve remained friends. I didn’t know this was happening behind my back until just before the rose ceremony. At that point, I was pissed and wanted him gone.

Is it revenge time?
I’m not one to contrive this huge plan to take out people, but everyone else was telling me, “We want to get rid of Reid because of what he did to you.” I respect him for playing the game, but he made some bad moves early on and lost my trust. Expect a big blowout.

We even had a weigh-in from Bachelorette alumn Jillian Harris. She declared during a conference call that “playtime is over and Reid, who is conspiring against him better watch out”. We love it when a situation gets so real that a previous lead has to weigh-in!
