Software sales rep Ben Higgins may be a household name now, but before he exploded onto the scene in Kaitlyn Bristowe’s season of The Bachelorette he was just a small-town Christian boy from Warsaw, Indiana, population of 13,559.
Ben is the only child of parents, David and Amy Higgins who still live in Warsaw.
In high school at 6’4″ and 190 lbs he was the quarterback of the Warsaw High School Football team —- despite some painful knee injuries.
The IndyStar spoke to some of his classmates and coaches.
People close to him applaud him for his humility. High school football coach Troy Akers said,
“Above all else is his humbleness. He’s a very humble guy,” ……”He is the kind of kid, I just can’t see him ever losing his head.”
“It still seems really bizarre,” said Akers, “to think of Ben as ‘The Bachelor.’ ”
“Had he not had injuries — Ben had good mechanics, he went to all the right camps — (and) chosen to play college football, I don’t have any shadow of a doubt he would have (had the opportunity),” Akers said.
Higgins spent the rest of his time attending youth group and teaching Sunday school at the Warsaw Community Church.

“He is extremely down to earth, very caring. To us, he’s still a nobody,” said Tracy Furnival, director of Baker Youth Club.
“I think he was absolutely the right choice for ‘The Bachelor,’ ” said Furnival, “to turn the morality of the show around.”
Ha!! The “morality” of the show definitely needs to be “turned around” after Bachelorette Kaitlyn Bristowe’s hot mic impromptu sex scenes.
In High School Ben even mentored kids.
“Whenever Ben was here, the kids just flocked to him,” said Furnival. “He just has this air about himself that is very genuine. He would sit down and they’d huddle around him and they’d talk. They saw him for who he was.”
